This week, Apex Legends kicked off The Old Ways event with a new update. Among other things, the patch also introduced Duos as a permanent option available for players. Developer Respawn previously experimented with Duos in other events, but this is the first time the mode has become a permanent fixture. Whenever Duos get mentioned, Solos fans also make their desire for the mode known. According to Respawn, the case for Solos is harder to make compared to Duos. In a Reddit post, the developer explained that Duos had positive effect on the game’s health compared to Solos when it was introduced.
“When we introduced Solos as a limited-time mode last year we saw it actually negatively impacted the game, especially when it came to new player retention,” explained the developer. There’s also the team play argument. Respawn says the abilities of the various Legends were designed to work together, something you can’t do in Solos. This makes certain abilities or entire characters pretty much useless. “We’re still exploring ways to allow a Solo experience, but for now grab a friend (or two) and jump into the arena,” the developer added. Perhaps the next Apex Legends event will introduced a new version of Solos that’ll have a more positive impact. Until then, The Old Ways is live now through April 21.
